Q: Do you know if consuming flax seed oil will help with my hypothyroidism or make it worse?
A: As far as I know, there has been no scientific study as yet of the effects of different nutritional oils upon thyroid function. However, I have heard that coconut oil speeds up the thyroid whereas flax, pumpkin and sesame seed oils slow it down. So if you are hyperthyroid, you might want to avoid coconut oil and consume flaxseed oil or sesame oil instead. And the reverse would of course be true if you are hypothyroid. If your thyroid fluctuates between hyper and hypo, you would alter your oil consumption accordingly.
